Description: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was developed in the early 1990’s by Marsha Linehan as a form of treatment for women with histories of self-harm and suicidal behavior. This type of treatment is an integration of traditional behavior therapy and Eastern-origin mindfulness practices. Fundamental to DBT is the notion that clients have inherent wisdom and capabilities to bring about change in their own lives, and it is the therapist’s role to uncover and help gain access to this wisdom and capability.  DBT aims at enhancing clients’ capabilities (or skills) in four key areas: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

  1. Participants will enhance their clinical skill with an understanding of DBT strategies for enhancing client capabilities.
  2. Participants will gain an understanding of DBT strategies to improve client motivation.
  3. Participants will learn how to structure their milieu environment using a DBT framework.
